Installing a Ceiling Fan Video by Mister Sparky Electricians – Contra Costa: San Ramon, Concord, Danville, CA

Posted in: Industry News

This is a video on how to install a ceiling fan in place of your existing light fixture.  If you want to install a ceiling fan in a place where you don’t have a light fixture you will need an electrician to run electrical wires to provide power to that location.

Below are the 10 steps featured in the video.  Always make sure to turn off your power and double check that it is off with a voltage meter.

10 Steps – How to Install a Ceiling Fan

  1. Check for blade clearance – You need at least 7 feet from the ground and at least 12 inches from the ceiling.
  2. Turn off the power – Double check with a voltage meter!
  3. Remove the existing lighting fixture – check to make sure your junction box is a UL approved fan rated box.
  4. (If necessary) Install a new junction box – check that the junction box is securely tightened.  If loose it can cause your fan to wobble which could cause your fan to fall.  Don’t forget to attach your grounding wire.
  5. Glue on your ceiling medallion if using one.
  6. Mount your ceiling plate.
  7. Assemble your fan.  Feed the fan’s motor wires through the canopy, then through the down rod pipe and insert the pipe into the top of the motor.  Tighten the screw on the side of the pipe.
  8. Connect the wires.  Lift the fan and set the ball assembly into the ceiling plate.  Join the two green wires, then the white wires and finally the black wires with wire nuts.
  9. Attach the blades and light fixture.  Attached the blades to the brackets and the brackets to the motor.  Plug the light fixture into the housing of the motor.  Add the light bulbs and shade.
  10. Turn the power back on.

If you have flickering or popping lights turn off your power and call an electrician.
