Your Goal Setting Persona

There are three types of people when it comes to goal-setting. How does goal setting make you feel?

  1. You are excited about setting new goals… but you easily become distracted and a bit discouraged as the months go by.
  2. You feel a knot in your throat while trying to set a goal. “I’ll do it later” might be something you say to yourself.
  3. Your self-discipline is impecable. You easily can identify your goals, although it isn’t as easy to keep your path straight and narrow, you remind yourself of whats to come at the end of the journey and the benefits you will reap.

If you’ve gotten this far in the blog, my assumption is that you fall between one and two, like most people.

But here’s a thought that might bring a sigh of relief no matter what goal-setting type you are:

Goal-setting ought to be fun.

Yes, I said it. FUN. So why isn’t it? Why does it seem like a chore? One that nobody ever wants to do.

Well, misconception plays a big role. Your goal is at the end of a very long, strenuous journey. Often, we just tend to look at the LARGE picture, when in reality it is a bunch of SMALL pictures combined into one,  these make the masterpiece. If you separate your large goal into steps, mini-goals, each mini-goal seems more manageable and more achievable.

Once you complete a mini-goal, you celebrate as if it were the large goal. Knowing you are one step closer to achieving your LARGE goal is so satisfying.

Here’s an important point to remember:

Steps and mini-goals happen pretty quickly and normally are immediate. This leaves you less likely to push this off or “wait till later.” Taking it one step at a time will make goal setting feel more rewarding as you complete each step.

The most important thing to realize is that the goals we set for ourselves tend to be black and white.

Human beings are not.

We have spun around and turned upside down by many outside factors over which we have minimal control. To think in black and white, will rarely pay off for you, it doesn’t factor in… Life.

Take a few moments to think about how you’ve spent your goal-setting. What were some of your past goals, what was the outcome? Also, from what you know about yourself, what kind of goal-setter are you?
