Oakland, CA – Understanding DISC Behavioral Styles for Business Partners

Posted in: Industry News

Understanding your business partner’s behavioral style can help improve your communication and performance, and avoid conflicts. Behavioral styles are how we are wired to act. It allows us to observe and appreciate, instead of judging which style is better than the other.

Here is a quick overview of the four behavioral styles in the DISC system.

Let’s say you are the owner of a moving company and are in dire need of someone to drive across the state. You’ve received applications, however, none of them are experienced. You could give them a manual and train them.

You ask four people, each with a different behavioral style.

Conscientious: “I would want to know how driving a truck is different from driving a car. What do I need to look out for while driving? What else is important to know? I would want to read the manual.”

Influence:  “Just give me the keys, I can’t wait to start it up and see how it goes!” [Looks at examiner] “I can’t believe you’d read the manual!”

Steadiness: “I would want to know what the emergency is. Where are we going? Do we have a map? What are the stops along the way?”

Dominance: “Just give me the keys. I’ll figure it out.”

The lesson here is that if we know someone’s behavioral style, we will know how they want to be treated.

75% of people you meet will have a different behavioral style than you. It’s common to pair up with a business partner who has different strengths than you. It may also mean they are a different behavioral style than you as well.

There are people that are built to have amazing communication with people they just meet, and then there are those who feel more comfortable working behind the computer…far away from crowds of people.

Everyone has a different behavioral style that makes them succeed or fail in certain atmospheres. It’s great to know these ahead of time especially when creating a partnership with someone.

By making people comfortable with you and communicating seamlessly means identifying and understanding their style so that you can treat them the way they want to be treated and communicate with them the way they understand best.
