TRADITIONAL CHRISTMAS FOODChristmas will be here before you know it. We at Christmas Light Pros TN don’t know about you, but besides gazing at gorgeous holiday lighting, one of our favorite things to do is chow down on a full Christmas spread! For us, the center of attention has got to be a perfectly prepared turkey! Check out our recipe and helpful tips below.

You’ll need:

1 (12 LB) whole turkey

3/4 cup olive oil

2 teaspoons dried basil

2 tablespoons garlic powder

1/2 teaspoon black pepper

1 teaspoon ground sage

1 teaspoon salt

2 cups water

Prep: 15 minutes Cook: 3 hours, 30 minutes

Step 1: Preheat oven to 325° F or 165° C. Clean out the giblets and feed them to the pets, or make gravy of them if you’re feeling daring! Place turkey in lidded roasting pan. If you don’t have a pan with a lid, use a turkey bag or aluminum foil to keep moisture in.

Step 2: Using a small bowl, combine all the seasonings with olive oil. Apply the mixture to the outside of the turkey using a basting brush. Pour water in the bottom of the pan and cover it up!

Step 3: Bake for 3 to 3.5 hours, or until the temperature of the thickest part of the thigh registers at 180° F/82° C on the thermometer. Remove turkey from the oven, and leave it alone for 30 minutes before carving and enjoying.

There’s also a variation of this recipe that prepares the seasonings a little bit differently. Mix them up with a softened whole stick of butter or margarine inside of a plastic sandwich bag. Place the bag in the fridge, and once it’s hardened up, slice and place the pats of butter under the skin and inside the bird’s cavity. The turkey ends up being so moist, you barely even need gravy!
