Sheffield, AL – Mosquitoes Attracted to Light? Mosquito Control Expert Answers

Mosquitoes Attracted to LightJust about all of us have heard that mosquitoes are attracted to light. We’re told to keep lights out or dimly lit while outside to keep the annoying pests away from us as the citronella candles burn brightly. But, is it true that mosquitoes are attracted to light or is this merely one of many misconceptions the general public has about mosquitoes?

MythBusters: Is it True?

It is a myth. Mosquitoes are NOT attracted to light.

In fact, we see mosquitoes at night rather than during the day because they spend their time avoiding light, like sunshine. During the day, mosquitoes tend to stay in shady areas because they dehydrate quickly and die even faster.

When the sun goes down for the day, mosquitoes feel safe and come out to play, er at least from their point of view. We all know how frustrating the pest can be when they rapidly attack our bodies, leaving itchy welts behind. And we’re guilty of nothing more than being outside at the wrong time.

Light Disorients Mosquitoes

But, you say,  I see mosquitoes near light ALL THE TIME! What gives?

Light disorientates mosquitoes. Any time you see the pest near light, such as a lamp or light bulbs, it’s most likely disoriented and confused. The bug probably did not intend to fly in that direction.

But…There is an Exception

Evidence suggests mosquitoes are attracted to colored light such as blue, green, and violet. Again, the light doesn’t really attract the mosquito. However, it just sees those colors. They do their best to avoid all sources of natural light, even colored lights.

What Does Attract Mosquitoes?

Carbon dioxide and body heat are what really attracts mosquitoes. We pass carbon dioxide every time we breathe and exhale, so we inevitably create it. This is the biggest reason mosquitoes find their way to you. Body heat also attracts mosquitoes, even when you are cool and comfortable and your body relaxed.
