How long do bedbugs live? How long will the pest burden your life? Anyone who has ever dealt with bedbugs certainly needs those answers. Look at the bed bug life cycle to learn more.

Average Lifetime of a Bed Bug

Bed bugs average a lifetime of about 10 months, considerably longer than the average pest. Some can live a couple of extra months and survive about 12-months. This is an incredibly long amount of time for homeowners to unwillingly share their homes with this pest.

Bed Bug Life Cycle

Bed bugs cycle through multiple stages of life. Female bed bugs lay eggs in groups of up to 50 at a time. The small, one-millimeter eggs are about the same size as a mustard seed.

Eggs take six to 17 days to hatch. A single female bed bug can lay hundreds of eggs over the span of her lifetime. In about 37 days, an egg reaches the adult stage of life, so long as they have the right conditions.

Tiny bed bugs are called nymphs. The nymph has five stages of growth before reaching the adult phase.  The bedbug sheds its skin during each stage and eventually grows from a small 1.5-millimeter size to a length of about 4.5 millimeters long.  The bed bug grows about 0.5 millimeters at each stage of life.

Nymph bed bugs are ready to feed, and just like adults, their diet consists of human blood. Nymphs will bite animals such as cats and dogs as well, which isn’t common amongst adult bed bugs.

Bed bugs can survive their entire year of life without feeding if conditions are right.

How to Treat Bed Bugs

Bed bugs are a force to be reckoned with and usually require professional treatment to rid them from a property. Bed bugs are resistant to most pesticides on the market. Full extermination of bedbugs from a property requires expert attention and pesticides designed to take care of business.
