New Wall Sign for Elmbrook Church in Brookfield, Wisconsin

When we were contacted by one of our partners and asked if we could help them come up with an ecenomical way to deliver a custom wall sign, we didn’t really know what they were thinking of.  We knew that Elmbrook Church was rebranding the interior of the church (both in Brookfield and Hartland) and coupling that with a launch of an updated website. The scope and scale of this project turned out to be rather large.

As it turns out, the church has a wall near the kids center that measureas about 90′ long that they wanted to put the logo for the kids area on. We showed them multiple different ideas from custom cut laser acrylic to a vinyl print.  The customer liked the idea of a raised substrate, like the 1/2″ cut acrylic. They just didn’t have the budget for it as the sign measures 73″ x 64″.  So how do we give the customer what they wanted at an economical price? When I sat down with my designers and explained the situation, they started to walk through other jobs we did that used different substrates.  When we balanced the ideas with the constraint of the budget, we were able to eliminate quite a few.  The interesting part is that just two weeks earlier we recieved a delivery and mixed in with our normal 1/8″ PVC were three panels of 1/2″ PVC. We agreed to take them so our vendor didn’t have to ship them back.  So we just happened to have 1/2″ PVC in stock with no use for it, until now.  We went back to the customer and proposed our solution.  They were sold!

Now the fun started. As you can tell by the picture above, there aren’t any square corners or lines on this sign and as it measures over 48″ tall, it was going to require that we cut the PVC by hand.  The print was uneventful as we printed on 3M’s utility grade IJ35C with air release. We also laminated the print to add a second layer of protection against color fading and scratching.  Because we applied the vinyl first, we were able to use the print as a guide to cut the substrate.  Our production manager used a razor knife and a bit of elbow grease to cut cleanly through the material.  Once this sign is mounted to the wall you won’t be able to see the seam that runs down the middle of the print.
