Franklin, WI – New Pylon Sign for Burger Restaurant in Suburban Milwaukee

Posted in: Recent Projects

When a business has a great location but can’t be seen from the street, they have several options.  One option is installing a pylon sign like the one pictured to the left.  Of course, many issues have to be addressed before installing the sign.  This project was no different.

The Milwaukee Burger Bar, located on South 27th Street in Franklin, Wisconsin, has a premium location. Still, the building is a bit off the street, so the visibility of the building is somewhat obstructed.  Because most restaurants count on customers being able to see the restaurant from the road, this was an issue.  When the owners found Optimum Signs, they thought we were just like every other sign company they had worked with over the past 15 years.  They were surprised when we returned their call within 1 hour of requesting a call.  Our discussions surrounded the need for a pylon sign to give the restaurant more visibility. The obstruction is that the municipal code no longer allows for pylon signs and requires a base equal to 80% of the surface of the sign face.  The devil is always in the details.  Optimum Signs realized that the only other option would be a monument sign if we couldn’t put up a pylon sign.  Monument signs are more useful when there is a main line of sight.  We had trees and bushes that obstructed the visibility of the proposed movement.  So how do you make a monument sign function like a pylon sign without being a pylon sign? You maximize the movement’s height and build a “base” that covers the pylon post and mirrors a monument sign.  After submitting our design to the municipality, we fine-tuned the design to meet the municipality’s requirements.

We were also surprised that every utility had facilities buried in the grassy area between the parking lot and the street.  EVERY SINGLE UTILITY.  It was crazy.  The rules surrounding locating a ground penetration sign near any of these utilities are very heavily regulated, so this is not something that a company wants to make a mistake on. We had a representative onsite when we located the position of the sign from almost every company. It is that important that the distances are maintained.

With Optimum Signs, we don’t shy away from challenging projects.
