What is Delta-8-THC?

Delta-8-THC is not to be confused with THC, which is frequently mentioned in cannabis discussions. THC usually refers to delta-9-THC, the most common form of THC found in cannabis. Delta-8-THC is a chemical analog of delta-9-THC, which has a similar structure but a few key differences. Delta-8-THC has a lower psychotropic potency than delta-9-THC, despite the fact that they have many similar properties, such as reportedly stimulating appetite, reducing nausea, and soothing pain.

Medical Potential of Delta – 8 THC

Appetite-stimulant

Delta-8 THC, also at extremely low doses, improved appetite and cognitive function in mice, according to a 2004 study published in Pharmacol Biochem. “Without cannabimimetic side effects, delta(8)-THC (0.001 mg/kg) improved food intake and had a potential to enhance cognitive function. As a result, a low dose of THC may be a promising therapeutic agent in the treatment of obesity with few of the negative side effects associated with cannabis use.”

Anxiety

Delta-8-THC, like delta-9-THC, has anxiety-relieving properties, according to the US National Library of Medicine. Although there is currently little clinical research into delta-8-THC’s anti-anxiety potential, anecdotal reports say that it produces a calm, concentrated high without the anxiety that is often associated with delta-9-THC.

Pain Reliever

Delta-8-THC can help to reduce pain and inflammation in mice with corneal injury, according to a 2018 preclinical study published in “Cannabis and Cannabinoid Research.” Delta-8-THC, when applied topically, was found to help with pain relief and inflammation reduction by acting on the CB1 receptors. Another preclinical research on rats found that delta-8-THC alleviates pain, but tolerance to the cannabinoid formed quickly.

Anti-Nausea Properties

In a 1995 study published in the journal “Life Sciences,” delta-8-THC was found to have anti-nausea properties. The research followed eight pediatric cancer patients for two years and discovered that when they consumed delta-8-THC before and for 24 hours after cancer treatment, they did not vomit. There were very few side effects recorded in the sample.

Antitumor

Delta-8 THC is one of the cannabinoids that has been shown to inhibit tumor development, according to a report published in 2013 and cited by the National Cancer Institute: “…Delta-9-THC, delta-8-THC, and cannabinol (CBN) were found to inhibit the growth of Lewis lung adenocarcinoma cells in vitro and in vivo. In addition, cannabinoid-induced growth inhibition has been shown to prevent the growth of other tumors.”
