Once you have decided to pursue an outdoor sign, you need to focus on how to put together an EFFECTIVE sign.  You want your sign to accomplish its purpose.

1. Make sure the message is clear
   1. You typically have only a few seconds to get your message across with people driving by your outdoor sign. 
   2. Go over your message and remove any and all words that are not necessary for your message. 
   3. Get down to EXACTLY what you want your customers to know about your business.
2. Make sure there is plenty of “white space” to reduce distractions
   1. After you remove unnecessary wording, be sure that nothing else will distract your customers’ attention.
   2. Graphics can be a great way to catch the viewer’s attention, however, too many graphics will pull their attention away from the message YOU want them to see.
   3. Make sure you leave areas of your sign with “nothing” to look at.  This will force the attention back to your message that you want the customer to see.
3. Make sure the sign is easy to see.The LOCATION of your outdoor sign can make a HUGE difference in how effective it will be.
   1. Your sign should be in the line of sight of your customers. 
   2. The customer’s view should be unobstructed. 
   3. People will not pay attention to an outdoor sign that they have to make an effort to see
4. Have an “Attention Grabber”
   1. What is going to MAKE your customers notice and read your sign?
      1. Items that are pleasing to the eye catch attention
      2. The “right” color catches attention 
      3. A well written headline will get attention
      4. Use large print
