Most business owners know the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) requires them to install ADA-compliant signs. But they may not know these signs don’t have to be boring or cookie-cutter. There are many ways to customize ADA signs to match a business’s style and needs.

Customizing ADA Signs

While the ADA does have specific sign guidelines for the size, location, and font, there is still some room for customization.

Sign material: ADA signs can be made from various materials, including metal, wood, plastic, and glass. The only requirement for ADA signs is the material must be heavy-duty, resistant to fading, and have a non-glare finish.

Sign design: ADA signs can be customed to include the business’s logo, colors, and other branding elements. The ADA requires the font to be Sans Serif, without embellishments, but many font options are still available. Also, the symbols and Braille text on the sign have specific requirements depending on the sign type, but the open space can be customized.

Sign location: ADA signs must be placed in a location visible and accessible to those with disabilities. There is some flexibility where the sign can be placed if it meets the required specifications. Most ADA signs must be between 48 and 60 inches from the floor. But if the business has an entryway which is not level with the ground, the sign can be placed lower.

Text Size: The text on ADA signs must be at least 5/8 inches high but no larger than 2 inches tall. The sign’s overall size will likely determine the font size. The greater the distance the larger the text needs to be in order to be visible.

Material Options for ADA Signs
