It’s widely known that currently there’s no known vaccine for COVID-19. This is why the virus is still very much present and people all over the world are contracting it. With that said, there are a few ways in which you can prevent the spread of the coronavirus and protect yourself and your family from it. These ways include practicing social distancing, maintaining your hygiene, wearing cloth face masks, and keeping your home clean and disinfected.
Here’s how you can clean and disinfect your home during the COVID-19 Pandemic:
How to Clean and Disinfect Your Home
Here’s a thorough guide on how to clean your home:
- Make sure to wash your hands with soapy water for about 20 seconds and wear rubber or disposable gloves.
- Use soap and water to clean the various surfaces in your home, particularly high-touch surfaces such as doorknobs, light switches, countertops, tables, desks, handles, hair backs, phones, keyboards, sinks, toilet seats, faucets, etc.
- As for disinfecting your home, make use of a household disinfectant and carefully follow the instructions on the label. Alternatively, you can use a bleach solution (use 5 tablespoons of bleach per gallon of water). You can also use alcohol solutions with at least 70% alcohol.
Now, let’s see how to disinfect particular household items and surfaces:
Soft Surfaces
Here’s what you need to do to clean and disinfect soft surfaces such as drapes, rugs, and carpeted floors:
- Use soapy water or a household cleaner to clean them. Alternatively, you can launder these items by following the manufacturer’s instructions. Just keep the water on the warmest setting and make sure to dry the items as thoroughly as possible.
- For disinfecting such surfaces, use an EPA-registered household disinfectant.
Electronics
Here’s how to clean and disinfect your electronic items including your remote controls, phones, laptops, and keyboards:
- Use a cleanable cover to protect your devices.
- Disinfect the items as per the manufacturer’s instructions. If there are no instructions that you can follow, then use sprays with at least 70% alcohol or alcohol-based disinfectant wipes to disinfect these objects.
- Thoroughly dry the surface of each object after cleaning and disinfecting it.
Laundry
- Wear disposable gloves when doing laundry, particularly when washing the clothes of an ill person. With that said, you can wash their clothes with the other laundry.
- Just follow the instructions by the manufacturer to wash the laundry.
- Use the warmest water setting and dry each laundry item as thoroughly as possible.
- After getting done with the laundry, remove your gloves, discard them in a covered bin, and wash your hands for 20 seconds with soapy water before you touch anything else.
If a family member is exhibiting symptoms of coronavirus or has contracted it, then make sure to quarantine them in a room that is separate from the rest of the house until they feel better.
