Elements of Sign Visibility

While choosing the letter size for your signage needs, you need to be aware of letter visibility. This is essential in the event when you need a large sign that you need to be seen from a long distance. For small signs that will be viewed from a close-up, the lettering will be visible entirely under four or five inches in height. Here we have added a letter visibility chart so that you can get an idea about the ratio of visibility to letter size.

Remember, style of font colors, font styles, and overall color scheme of the sign play a crucial role in letter visibility. The letter visibility can also be affected by the weather. In your sign design, your space availability and letter visibility can be an issue. (See below for more information)

ONE INCH = APPROX. 30 FEET OF VISIBILITY

Viewing Distance Minimum required letter height (inches)
100 ft 4″
250 ft 10″
360 ft (city block) 16″
500 ft 22″
750 ft 33″
1000 ft 43″
1320 ft (1/4 mile) 57″

Font Style:

There are so many types of font styles and types. Some font styles are basic, some bold, some scripty, some dainty, and some are artistic in style. Sharp, bold fonts can be easily noticed from the far distance, while font styles that are more akin to handwriting can have readability issues from a bit distance.

Font Color:

If your letter visibility needs long-distance visibility, you have to consider the color scheme. The best combination you can make is a light and dark color sequence. So, if your background color is is dark, add light-colored lettering and vice versa. Adding dark text on the dark background color scheme can completely ruin the sign visibility.

Weather:

Another factor that affects the letter visibility is – weather. The letter visibility can be affected by clear weather and inclement weather conditions. If you display your sign in an area where there is an issue of changing weather conditions in sign clarity, then you may need to choose a larger letter size to keep the sign visible in bad weather.

Space Availability

If you want to include large size text for maximum visibility from the far distance, but you don’t have enough space to display, this could lead to considerable confusion. To know if you have chosen the right letter visibility size that will perfectly fit in the available space, you need to check out the width and height of the text. Generally, letters are as wide as they are tall hence if you need 7-inch tall lettering that reads “NOW OPEN,” you need to have an available space of 48 inches in width. (The width of lettering can be determined by multiplying the height by 0.85, then increasing that number times the number of characters needed.)
