Safety Film Lobby of Highland Village Elementary School in Highland Village, TX

Posted in: Special Offer

Contacted by a general contractor that was needing a security solution for the entrance of the newly renovated Highland Village Elementary School.  The Architect in charge of the project suggested safety filming to the main entrance exterior glass, interior lobby glass, and the office glass to main office.  We supplied samples of products that meet GSA security requirements, products used on Federal buildings.

Product chosen was a 8-mil safety film manufactured by Hanita Coatings.  This product applied in the 3 areas of the lobby and entrance adds up to 24 mils of protection bonded to glass to help protects students and office staff.  Hightened security in schools has been a growing part of our business since school shootings have become a not so rare occurence, tragically.

Safety film can be applied exteriorly as well as interiorly to provide double protection or protection to glass that can be accessed in only one way.  Safety film products are used in Federal buildings to help combat flying glass in the case of an act of terror.  Coastal buildings will incorporate safety film to help combat Hurricanes/Typhoons, as well.

One of the most important things to evaluate, is what the main threat trying to be stopped.  Different glass types will determine a recommended thickness of film and/or an attachment system.  Some glass types it will not be critical for an attachment system.  Other glass types, tempered mainly, typically will benefit with safety film and some type of attachment system.  Attachment systems can be as simple as a 995 Dow Corning caulk bead that attaches the film to the frame that holds the glass.  This creates an attachment of the film with the frame of the window creating a barrier once the glass is broken.  With film properly attached to the frame, once glass is broke, it will require force to “chop” thru or “break” thru the film.
