Architectural Glass Solutons has worked with the engineering department of the Plaza of the Americas since 1998.  Both towers had a solar film product installed in the early 1990’s.

Even with a solar film installed, the building was still experiencing varying temperatures in offices on different sides of the building during daylight hours.  These temperature differences were being caused by the sun exposed glass of both towers.

By 2002 there were products available in the solar film industry that were not produced a decade prior.  Joe Baker of Architectural Glass Solutions presented the newest in technology to the engineering dept and management of the Plaza.

These new products would increase the energy rejection from the present product 65% to 83% with new technology solar film along with the added feature of a dual-reflective coating.  Dual-reflective coating is a lower back-reflectivity layer on the inside of the film to allow vision out of the windows at night.

The energy reduction numbers are verified by an independent testing agency, AIMCAL and are inputed into the DOE2 software package to calculate the energy savings and a payback on the investment.  The results showed that by increasing the energy efficiency from 65% to 83%, the payback calculated right at 3 years on the total investment.  The product has a manufacturers warranty for 15 years for product and labor.

So the decision by Plaza management via the recommendation of the engineering department was easy, it was just a matter of budgeting the project.

Architectural Glass Solutions successfully completed the project in the spring of 2006, taking a total of 6 months to complete.
