Are you confused about what nutrition advice to believe?

As adults, we all must recognize the importance of consuming a well-balanced diet for our health. (Even if you might not be doing the things you should be doing. 🙂 ) A healthy diet not only helps you shed a few extra pounds but it’s responsible for giving you the energy you need to survive the day, fending off illness, and feeling good.

Today there is so much information and conflicting ideas about how to be healthy it can be really confusing. Marketing companies complicate things with fake studies, misinterpreted studies, or simply projecting a healthy image that is really compelling. We end up relying on inaccurate information that is popular at the moment. As a result, we end up making the wrong choices even when we think we are being healthy. We want to help you bust some common myths. Have you believed one of these?

1. Salt is White Poison

The first nutrition myth we are going to discuss is the common misconception about salt.  Salt is often blacklisted by people because of older studies saying that it raised blood pressure and lead to cardiovascular diseases. For this reason, many people assume that eliminating salt completely from their diet is good for health. This is actually far from the truth.

In fact, a healthy intake of salt is necessary to control your blood pressure. Salt contains sodium and chloride which are the most common ions in our blood. They help our blood supply oxygen and nutrients to the tissues in our body. This is how salt helps the nerves and muscles of your body work properly so you should continue to consume a healthy amount of salt in your diet.

A study during a Mars simulation experiment is an excellent example of how sale actually behaves in the body. It was previously thought that salt left the body in 24 hours but during the Mars500 experiment, they found that people store and release salt rhythmically over weeks and months, regardless of diet. Furthermore, this did not affect blood pressure.

P.S. That means that you need to stop blaming salt for bloating after a meal out. Salt is not the only reason or often even the major reason why you are bloated after a meal…that is from food intolerances. Your body’s natural response is to retain water to try to dilute toxins. So the next time you are bloated after a meal, don’t blame the salt.

2. Egg Whites Are Always Healthy

Egg-cuse me but if you are just eating the white then the 80s wants it’s nutrition facts back! Dietary cholesterol does not drive blood cholesterol. A few decades ago people feared that eating eggs would cause high cholesterol but they didn’t get that quite right. In fact, if you don’t get enough cholesterol then your body has to make it. Also, there’s a treasure chest of vitamins, minerals, protein and fat inside the yolk that all work together to help build muscle and provide other health benefits.

One thing that you actually should consider with eggs is that eggs can also cause food sensitivities and allergies. In fact, an egg allergy is the second most common type of food allergy in children. Simply eating eggs too frequently can cause sensitivities.  In our practice, we do blood tests for food sensitivities (which are different than allergies) and we often find people sensitive to eggs.

3. Following a Keto Diet Means That I Get to Eat Cheese and Meat While Losing Weight

There is a lot of buzz about the keto diet, however, very few people actually know how it works. The ketogenic diet consists of consuming foods that are very low in carbohydrates, moderate in proteins, and very high in fat. This is why many people mistakenly believe that they can eat as much cheese as they want in a keto diet.

While a keto diet can be appropriate for some people, for others it spells disaster. The keto diet can lead to low blood pressure, kidney stones, constipation, nutrient deficiencies and an increased risk of heart disease. Keto is definitely not safe for those with any conditions involving their pancreas, liver, thyroid or gallbladder.

There is also a healthy and an unhealthy way to do a keto diet. If you focus too much on processed foods then you will end up causing long term health problems. the scariest thing is that these issues won’t show up for a long time. Are you old enough to remember the Atkin’s diet? If so the principles of the keto diet might often look very similar. And yes, they do share some of the same risks.

If you’re looking for more guidance on healthier eating habits and are wondering if keto is right for you, then you should get in touch with Cambiati Wellness Programs. They offer a wide range of services which will help you become the healthiest version of yourself.
