There are several important rules that should be followed for office recycling. These “golden rules” of recycling are important to running a successful commercial recycling program.  

Sort Materials By Stream

Anytime it is possible, always sort recycling materials by stream. In other words, attempt to separate recycling by type. Single stream recycling has widely been accepted, but the problem with this type of recycling is it can ruin the integrity of some recyclables, making them useless. For instance, plastic recycled with cardboard can leave food residue on the cardboard, making it destined for the landfill instead of recycling. Work with recycling pick-up companies to attempt recycling by stream as much as possible.

Know Where to Put Recyclables

If your office recycling program is going to sort by stream, then it is essential that every employee knows what type of materials are acceptable for each recycling bin. For instance, some types of plastics are recyclable and shouldn’t be put into a recycling bin. 

In addition, different types of paper cups, such as those with a plastic, leak-proof lining, are also not recyclable. Batteries are also always a no-no when it comes to recycling. Knowing what goes where will make office recycling much easier, especially for those in charge of office recycling programs and recycling companies as a whole.

Rinse and Repeat

Always rinse out and dry recyclables when possible. This gets rid of any residue that could potentially destroy the entire recycling bin. Even minuscule little pieces of residue stuck to the sides or tops of containers can make a dent in the number of materials in a bin that ends up being recycled.
