Houston, TX – Top 4 Office Recycling Mistakes We Can Correct at Mission Recycle

Posted in: Client Examples

When starting up an office recycling program, one point person usually takes the lead to set up and run the program. This person works with other office departments to make the program a success. However, there are a few common mistakes that should be avoided when beginning a recycling program in the workplace. Listed below are a few of the most common mistakes made that can affect the overall productivity of an office recycling program.

Inconvenient or Distant Locations

One key mistake to avoid is placing the landfill bin and recycling bin too far from each other or even in different rooms. If the containers aren’t near each other and placed in a conveniently located place for office workers to locate, it could mean failure for the office recycling program as employees won’t know where to go and what to do when it comes to recycling office products.

Same Color Bins

Another common mistake to avoid is setting out bins of the same color for both landfill and recycling bins. Having common silver or gold-colored bins doesn’t draw attention to the bins and denote a difference between them. Keeping a neutral landfill bin color next to a blue or green recycling bin helps the recycling bins to stand out and lets office workers know that each bin serves a different purpose. Additionally, recycling bins without a properly shaped opening that allows for recyclables to be deposited can also affect recycling in the workplace.

Labeling

Another key factor in office recycling is the labeling of bins. Bins without any signage or wording will be confusing. Bin labels should be easily visible from the front of the bin, not just on one side. Signs should also allow for change as the recycling program changes if need be. Using fancy signs with complicated pictures or working will only be more confusing. Make signs simple and easy to read.

Communication

Finally, proper communication is essential for office recycling programs. Lack of understanding or communication among employees can cause an office recycling program to fail. Be sure to keep employees updated on the program and provide education on how to use it in the workplace.
