Evacuation Maps: A Recurring SignWorks Project

We are doing our third evacuation map project so I thought I would share some of our insights regarding making this type of project an affordable one. Our most recent evacuation map projects have included:

• Garden Court Hotel, a 63-Room Boutique Hotel in Pala Alto
• Swan Way Building, Oakland (pictured)

While the projects were similar in scope the requirements between the Palo Alto and Oakland Fire Marshall’s vary somewhat. In Palo Alto the surface area can be much smaller and no header information or Braille is required. In all cases we opted to use a second surface mounting technique where the “map” is mounted to the backer plate using double sided optically clear mounting film. Once this is accomplished we use an in-house technique for attaching the print to clear flame polished acrylic. Often, this is accomplished elsewhere using a light-table; however, we have done exacting precision work without using one. And, the second surface mounting technique has a “high-end” look all its own!

In many instances the client manages the permitting process themselves and we simply supply the drawings for the approval process. Obviously, the more of the process the client manages the more affordable the project becomes.
