Union City, CA – LED Illuminated Channel Letters For Local Retail Business

Posted in: Client Examples

SignWorks  works with some very talented subcontractors who produce a variety of sign types so we thought we would share some insights from a recent sign projects for a local business in Union City.  The 16” tall LED Channel Letters pictured were installed using tall extension ladders given that the terrain would not accommodate a boom truck.  Illuminated signs fall into two broad categories, illuminated sign cabinets which can assume a variety of shapes, and/or individual channel letters.  The fabrication process involves using a CNC router to cut the aluminum sheeting into strips which are then bent to form the letter text.  Likewise the acrylic faces are routed and welded to the aluminum returns and the LED lights are then inserted.  In this case the letters are front lit, meaning the light shines from the front of the letter and not behind it.

The various lighting options are as follows:

  • Front Lit Channel Letters: These letters are produced using the latest technology and CNC routing equipment and are designed to the most exacting customer specifications.  These letters are very popular and can be produced quickly.
  • Reverse Channel Letters (Radiant Back Lit): This popular lettering style involves welding the aluminum returns to an aluminum face.  The light is then emitted from the back on the letter onto the wall where the letter is mounted.  The effect creates negative space at night.  When the inside of the letter is painted gloss white it helps the bright LED’s to shine even brighter from the polycarbonate rear of the letter. This is called a radiant back lit letter.
  • Front & Back Lit Channel Letters: These fabricated letters allow both the face of the letter to be illuminated while simultaneously allowing light to shine from the back of the letter.  By adding translucent vinyl to the face of the letter or changing the color of the LED’s, you can add sizzle and color to the letter.
  • Exposed Neon (LED) Channel Letters: Exposed channel letters are similar to standard channel letters but the face of the letter is not covered with acrylic or plastic.  Most California cities no longer allow exposed neon channel letters, so it is extremely important to check with your local city for the ordinances that apply in your particular area.
  • Non Illuminated Channel Letters: Eye catching channel letters that are well constructed need don’t have to be lit.  These letters can be mounted directly to a wall or sign face. They are made in the same high quality way as their lit counterparts.

Illuminated channel letters are very prevalent today and they are used on a variety of buildings, at shopping centers, by retail and grocery outlets and by banks, churches and schools.  They give a professional look to a building and these signs are versatile and stand out, especially at night.  It is important that you maintain your illuminated channel letters in a good working state.  Avoiding burnt out letters and the awkward spelling errors created by poor sign maintenance will send the wrong message to potential customers.
