San Francisco, CA – Site Survey To Evaluate A Building Directory

Posted in: Industry News

SignWorks works with a variety of constituents on various sign related tasks.  We are working with an architectural concern interested in exploring options for a classic building directory that needs a face lift.  In order to understand the options it was necessary to visit the site, obtain measurements and assess the options which include:

  • Re-lettering/engraving the individual 6 ½” wide slats to reflect the current tenants and suites.
  • Resize the lettering/engraving slats to more correctly balance the visual appearance and reduce the amount of dead space.
  • Explore a digital LED display but maintain the Brass Directory Header.

The architect and owner prefer options that will allow the integration of the existing brass frame, or at a minimum the header, which exudes the classic old world charm of the building with its polished stone entry lobby.

Nowadays static building and lobby directories are more modern, often with metallic slats or accents.  A case in point is our commercial real estate client who has us re-apply vinyl lettering when there are changes at the Vale Road (San Pablo) property they manage.  In fact, engraved slats are often replaced with cut vinyl so that as tenants change, the vinyl slat lettering is easily peeled and replaced with the new tenant information.  Either way, once the overall size of the directory space has been decided, the number of tenants will typically determine the size of the slats and the letter height.

As I mentioned, we are also exploring the digital LED display working through a couple of wholesale suppliers, especially WIFI enabled as the building lobby has no internet capability. More on this later.

If you are contemplating upgrades to your building and/or floor directories, SignWorks would love to hear from you!  We welcome the opportunity to make this process easier for you and we’re happy to help with design, fabrication and installation of your new directories.  For more information call us at (510) 357-2000.   And, if you’d like to learn more about us, just visit our website to view blog posts and photographs of recent projects.
