Oakland, CA – Evacuation Maps for Coliseum Transit Village Project Nears Completion

Posted in: Industry News

SignWorks continues to be an expert in the creation and fabrication of evacuation maps.  At present we are working with Cahill Contractors on the interior ADA (Americans with Disabilities Act) signs, accessible parking and evacuation map signs, along with the exterior brushed aluminum address numbers for Cahill’s Coliseum Transit Village project.  Of these the most complex is the evacuation maps, which normally involve a site visit to access layout and placement details for the various map symbols, egress path, stairs, elevators, etc.  In this case, we are a vendor and must rely on Cahill to supply these details to us.

We have worked from the core drawings supplied by the architects and dropped in the details based on input from the project management staff at Cahill.  We are waiting for one more review before sending the maps to be copied at full size and taken to the Fire Department for their review.  The fire department review process takes about two weeks and they require two full sized copies as well as one smaller one noted as not full sized.  Each map must be oriented to its exact position or placement within the building.  This is important because in the event of a fire, emergency personnel will use these maps to locate equipment such as fire extinguishers, pull stations and the like, as well as to access where they are and plan the best emergency exit route.

The architects have decided to size the required 15 maps at 19” wide and 24” tall, and once approved they will be fabricated using a non-glare acrylic lens over the map and text detail.  The material is required to be non-glare so that it is easily read even in smoky conditions with poor lighting.

Cahill contractors has been around for over 100 years is a local Bay Area company.  The company has the financial bidding and bonding capability for projects ranging from small tenant improvement and renovations to large high rise buildings!  Their projects range in scope across the commercial, health care, housing and education sectors and SignWorks has worked with them on a few school renovation projects in Oakland.

SignWorks has produced evacuation maps for several buildings in Oakland, as well as Pleasanton, three separate location in San Francisco including San Francisco Muni, and for a hotel in Palo Alto.  We are familiar with the guidelines for each, including their various differences.  If you are renovating or building a new structure we would like to be the company you call for your evacuation and fire safety signs.  Please give us a call at (510) 357-2000 .  We can help you determine how many maps you’ll need and schedule a site visit to your building. We will work with you on design, fabrication and installation, all the while offering a budget friendly solution.
