As mentioned in another recent article, SignWorks, Hayward, CA, has been working on a large-scale project that includes installing dimensional letters on a new building at the Oshman Family Jewish Community Center (OFJCC), Palo Alto, CA.

Signage is an important part of the construction industry and one that is often overlooked in the initial excitement of deciding on facility needs, floor plans, amenities, interior design and other details that factor into getting the project started. Often, signage planning is left until last, with little thought to how much money and time will be involved in this crucial piece.

Like architecture, signage is critical to both function and design. And, like other aspects of commercial construction, signs must be designed and installed with the goal of surviving decades of abuse from the elements. Safety is another important consideration, both in making sure signage is attached securely and that workers and the public are protected from injury during installation.

Errors can be made during any part of a custom sign project, delaying completion. Exterior signage projects begin with a site survey that informs what type of equipment and tools will be needed and how long it will take to complete. The OFJCC site survey we received was inaccurate and had to be completely redone. In addition, the letters we received from the manufacturer were missing a stud receptor that would have compromised their safe installation and had to be refabricated to ensure they would stay securely attached to the building.

Some of the letters in this project were to be attached to the building and others attached to glass, both of which require specialized equipment, tools and products. This project required renting a narrow articulating boom lift to reach some high and tight spaces and assigning a two-man crew for seven full days.
