Dimensional Letter Building and ADA Signs at Lafayette and Lowell Schools in Oakland, CA!

Posted in: Industry News

Product: Dimensional Letters & ADA signs

Location: Oakland, CA

Client: Oakland Unified School District

We were contacted by SGI Construction when during the course of their work with Oakland Unified School District (OUSD).  They discovered that the district needed new signage and that SignWorks was the sign company of record who supplied the signage for the renovation of Lowell Middle School some years earlier.  Since some location and name changes were necessary at the Lowell and Lafayette schools, the contractor recommended that the district use the original supplier in meeting the new signage needs.

The dimensional lettering updates included brushed aluminum lettering as follows:

·         LAFAYETTE ELEMENTARY SCHOOL

·         LOWELL EDUCATION CENTER

·         LAFAYETTE

The lettering varied in size based on where the sign was being mounted and the font (Myriad Bold) needed to be consistent with what the architects had originally specified.  Consistency across the campus would ensure a professional appearance and a unified look. The font style and color selection are consistent with the lettering used at both schools and is legible and very easy to read.  The letters can be viewed clearly from a distance.

In addition, two unisex bathrooms were being added, so ADA restroom and door signs were required.  The ADA compliant signs again were matched to the original set and fabricated using an anti-vandalism method where the Braille beads are chemically welded and materially embedded.  This makes it harder for the beads to be dug out from the acrylic backer material.  Our wholesale supplier is an expert in this arena and we have worked with them for several years.

Our designer was careful to make sure the contractor received a proof of exactly how the lettering and ADA restroom signs would look prior to placing the order with our supplier.  The proofing process ensures that no errors are introduced and allows the client to make sizing and material changes prior to fabrication.  Art approval is a very important part of the process.

The dimensional sign pictured above carries a life time warranty from Gemini, our wholesale supplier.  The district opted to install the signs themselves so we ordered the letters and pattern to ensure a smooth installation.  Located in Oakland, CA both public schools serve elementary and middle school aged children in Oakland.

We are sure you know there are many options when it comes to dimensional letter and we’re here to help you make the best choice when it comes to font, size, material and color.  Choices include LED lit letters and logos.  We prefer to use Gemini as our wholesale because of their lifetime product warranty and because they are recognized as an industry leader.

If you are considering a dimensional or ADA compliant sign and you are a school or similar institution in the San Francisco Bay Area, we want to hear from you!  We offer a variety of sign products and services, including design, fabrication and installation.  We are only a phone call away at (510) 357-2000 and our friendly staff is waiting to hear from you!
