Chandler, AZ – Drying Your Carpet and Preventing Mold Growth After Flooding

Posted in: Industry News

Not sure how to clean and dry your flooded carpet? Read on to learn how you can do that effectively.

If you have carpeted floors at home, flooding is the last thing you’d want to face. When your home does get flooded following a storm or heavy rainfall, you’ll need to act quickly to salvage your carpet. If you fail to clean and dry it on time, mold growth becomes inevitable. Mold growth will make your carpet useless and pose health-related risks for you and your family.

To avoid mold growth, follow these steps to dry your carpet after a flood:

Step 1: Fix the Water Source

Anything you do to dry your carpet will remain ineffective if the source of flooding is not fixed. If there’s a water leak, shut off the main water supply or in the case of a storm, wait for conditions to subside. When the water stops moving in, it should be much more easier to clean and dry your carpet.

Step 2: Dispose of Useless Items

Throw away any magazines, cardboard boxes, newspapers, and other items that have become useless and are nothing more than a source of clutter.

Step 3: Shift the Furniture

Any furniture sitting on the carpet will not only hamper the drying process but also stain the carpet. The furniture itself can sustain water damage by staying there. Therefore, shift the furniture to a different room before you proceed to clean and dry the carpet.

Step 4: Remove the Standing Water

Use a submersible pump to pump out water or simply a bucket to scoop out standing water that’s covering the carpet.

Step 5: Suck Up Water from the Carpet

Consider obtaining a shop vac, a strong vacuum that can remove excess water from your carpet. However, keep an eye on the vacuum tank. You will need to keep emptying it as you work.

Step 6: Lift the Carpet off the Floor

Removing the carpet from the floor will allow for better airflow, thereby speeding up the drying process and reducing the chances of mold growth. Keep the fans open throughout the drying process.

Step 7: Dispose of the Carpet Padding

If necessary, remove the carpet padding and throw it away. A water-damaged padding can make your carpet unsalvageable.

Step 8: Dry the Carpet and the Floors

Use a portable, waterproof dehumidifier and air movers to dry the carpet and floor. These are quite effective.

Step 9: Apply Disinfects

Floodwater can contain contaminants and chances of mold growth may still exist after getting rid of excess water. Use a reliable disinfectant to sanitize the floors do avoid mold issues and eliminate any lingering odor.

Step 10: Install a New Carpet Padding

If you had to dispose of your previous carpet padding, you will need to purchase and install a new one for your carpet.

Step 11: Put the Carpet in Place

After ensuring that all surfaces of the carpet are dried, reinstall your carpet on the floor.
