Hummer H1 Overhaul

At Fremont Auto we can both repair your vehicle and overhaul it to fulfill your unique needs. We recently had a 1997 Hummer H1 (the military model Hummer) in the shop for both a repair and an off-road upgrade. Let’s use this vehicle as a case study for what services we can offer both you and your 4×4.

Failed AC System

The H1 came in for an air condition system that wasn’t functioning properly. Upon inspection we discovered that the AC compressor itself broke, contaminating the rest of the cooling lines and system by leaking freon and letting air into the freon lines themselves. The air dryer was also not functioning, and the hoses and valve going to the heater core were also failing. The heater core is a small radiator that sits inside the cabin that has hot coolant from the engine running through it. When you turn on your heat, fans blow air over this hot heater core, resulting in warm air coming out of your dash’s air vents. The coolant hoses (“coolant” is a somewhat misleading name because the fluid temperature is actually around 200 degrees) feeding into the heater core were cracking and prone to leaking coolant out of the engine’s system – a catastrophe waiting to happen. The heater valve remains closed until the engine gets up to temperature, which both allows the engine to warm up faster and prevents you from blasting yourself with cold air for a prolonged period of time upon starting the car on a cold day. Replacing all these parts both put the air conditioning back in working order, as well as ensured the heating system will both continue to work and not result in the engine losing coolant, overheating, and causing major engine damage.

Customer Upgrades

While this vehicle was in the shop we also performed some part repairs for the customer. The vehicle came in with a damaged skid plate – a steel plate under the car that protects the engine and transmission from colliding with debris while offroading – that was in need of replacement or repair. Most shops would simply replace the broken component, however replacing this particular part with a new one was going to cost the customer around $2,500. Because of this it made sense to repair the plate in-house for a significantly smaller labor charge, saving the customer thousands. We also reinforced the skid plate to protect against similar future damage and installed several auxiliary offroad lights.
