Natick, MA – Tips for cleaning shattered glass after a wind storm or hurricane

Posted in: Industry News

It Happens

We’ve all been there. Whether it be a glass, plates, or even a decoration your friend wanted to show off, we’ve all dropped something that shattered into pieces on the floor. It’s nothing to be embarrassed about (except maybe the one your friend showed you), the only thing you should be worried about is the broken glass on the hard floor. Broken glass, when stepped on, can cause cuts which can cause infections and health problems if left untreated.

Tips and Tricks to Cleaning Glass

Close Off the Area.

The first thing you should do when glass breaks is warn others in or around the area and close off the area. You do not want traffic in the area because people can accidentally step on the glass and get hurt or accidentally carry tiny pieces of glass from the area to different parts of the house.

Wear Shoes.

Shoes not only make walking comfortable, they also are a layer of protection for your feet. The last thing you want to happen while cleaning glass is accidentally stepping on a glass shard. Unlike a lego piece that feels like it broke skin due when stepped on, glass shards, when stepped on, not only can break skin, but they can also wedge themselves deep into your feet like a sliver.

Broom and Dustpan.

The broom and dustpan are your best friends when cleaning broken glass. With the broom, you are able to sweep glass of all sizes into a pile and use the dustpan to safely move it to the trash. I suggest going over the area multiple times just in case.

Vacuum.

After sweeping, what should be left is little glass pieces that you could not get with your broom or that you have missed. Since the pieces are not big, they should not damage your vacuum.

Moist Cloth.

Finally, going over the area with a moist cloth multiple times (with different cloths) is a good way to make sure the area is safe for people to walk through. The water helps catch tiny pieces of glass that the broom and dustpan could not get.

When to Get Professionals Involved

It is up to your discretion whether or not to get professionals involved when broken glass is involved.
