How Much Does It Cost to Repair Water Damage?

The costs associated with water damage can be complex, often involving multiple layers.  For example, the water damage cost of a leak involves not only fixing the leaky pipe, but also the work to remove and or dry any materials that got wet. For example, if a pipe leaks behind the wall in the bathroom, the wall will need to be opened to fix the pipe. If drywall or insulation is wet, it will need to be removed and discarded. The amount of moisture in the framing will need to be assessed and dried in order to help prevent mold growth. If the leak has been undetected for some time, the chance of mold is pretty high, which significantly impacts the cost.

Once the pipe has been fixed by a licensed plumber and the wet material removed or dried to the normal moisture content range, the drywall will need to be replaced. It is often difficult to match the paint on new drywall so the bathroom may need to be completely repainted in order to match.

On the other hand, if an unfinished basement floods, costs rise because any items in the basement will need to be moved and possibly cleaned or dried. Any standing water will be extracted, and the area will need to be dried.

Water damage restoration costs will depend upon a number of factors, including the type and extent of damage, and the area of house or business that requires restoration and repairs. Furthermore, factors such as your area of residence, and the labor and material costs in that area will also influence the damage reparation costs to some extent.  That said, it is the type of water damage that is the single largest determinant of water damage repair costs.

Different Types of Water Damage

There are broadly three categories of water damage. Each will cost you differently when it comes to damage repair and restoration.

  • Clean Water damage is when the water involved comes from a clean source such as coming in through rain or from a water pipe. If, however, the water comes in contact with carpet, and pets are in the home or office, the water is automatically considered contaminated and Black Water.
  • Gray Water damage can be caused by water that is slightly used, such as that from a washing machine. It may have soaps, germs, or chemicals that would require treatment during cleanup.
  • Black Water damage is caused by water coming from a contaminated source such as sewer pipes that contain hazardous bacteria and other substances. If “Clean Water” has been present for 72 hours or more, the water likely has bacterial or fungal growth and is considered “Black Water.” The damage restoration costs will be the highest due to the extensive infection control practices and equipment that must be used.

All in all, water damage restoration can cost you differently depending on a number of factors involved. For personal safety and building safety, water damage restoration is best left to professionals like Service Team of Professionals (STOP).
