Leadership is a skill which can be taught, practiced and honed over time. There is a common misconception which assumes leaders are born, but leadership is a learned skill and can be perfect by people with any personality type.

In the business world, many times people are put into leadership roles because they are proficient in the industry where they work. For example, if an assembly line worker can produce the most products in the shortest amount of time, it’s logical for them to be promoted to a supervisory role at some point.

When this happens, company owners are often surprised if this person fails as a manager, but I would suggest the failure was not the fault of the new manager because it’s likely they weren’t trained to lead other people.

I am a business coach with the privilege of helping companies in and around the Fort Wayne area, including Warsaw. My specialty is providing one-on-one coaching for business owners or leaders of a company, with the aim of helping them achieve their goals.

When it comes to leadership training, many companies do what we discussed in the example earlier and blindly promote high-performing workers to oversee others. While this makes logical sense and I am certainly not against hiring someone from within, there must be some training which accompanies such a promotion.

People with proficiency in the field can be great teachers of others, but they need to learn some key skills. 

The first skill which we try to hone in leadership training is communication. As a manager, you are the go-between from the goals of the company’s leadership to the people on the ground. This responsibility can weigh heavily on a new manager, especially if their performance depends on the work of other people.

As an effective communicator, a leader needs to be able to take the goals from ownership and present them to their team in an easily-understandable way. From there, they must get buy-in from their team members and ensure everyone is pulling in the same direction on the way to the goal.

Another essential skill which goes hand-in-hand with communication is to learn to manage people in different styles. This skill can be honed by new managers and seasoned professionals alike, because the ability to discover a person’s learning style and tailor your leadership to best teach and motivate them is the key to unlocking people’s full potential.

Some business coaches promote group training for managers of their companies, but for the same reason mentioned above I prefer a one-on-one approach when training leaders. I can help them learn in their own way, and in turn teach them to do the same for others.
