Fort Myers, FL – Importance of Salt Tolerant Plants in Island Landscapes

Posted in: Industry News

Keep your yard thriving with salt tolerant plants

If you are living on one of our gorgeous Southwest Florida islands, like Sanibel, Captiva, Fort Myers Beach, or Marco Island, when we design your new landscape, we must take into account the high salt content of the soil and the air in these microclimates. This is just one of the unique landscaping challenges which come with the humid weather and salty soil which is a characteristic of many properties in the area. People who move to the area or try to landscape on their own find out quickly which plants won’t survive the salinity of the soil, so selecting salt-tolerant plants is key for a beautiful and thriving landscape anywhere in the area.

So let’s discuss some of the most popular salt tolerant plants we use in our landscape design, and the importance of using these plants when working on beachfront properties. When a landscape has particularly salty soil, we can make recommendations for grasses, flowers, vines, shrubs and trees which all can thrive in salty conditions. We have an extensive list of salt-tolerant vegetation we can use together to create any desired look. Many people immediately think of palm trees, but we can also plant oak, cedar and/or mangrove trees in salty soil to match any client’s desired look.

Some clients become very frustrated when trying to grow a lush, green lawn in salty soils. Using Zoysia or St. Augustine grass is ideal for these conditions and these grasses can thrive around the ocean.

We have a long list of flowers, vines and shrubs to pair with these grasses and trees, all of which can provide different color palettes, styles and designs to meet our clients’ desires. While you might feel boxed in if your property has salty soil, in many cases we can use salt-tolerant plants to protect less tolerant plants. So if your heart is set on a certain plant which isn’t as salt tolerant, we can still try to make it work in your garden.
