Vertigo or HeadacheA Simple Upper Cervical Correction Could Alleviate Your Vertigo or Headache

Two of the most common conditions I see in our office at Upper Cervical Health Centers of Fort Myers, are vertigo/dizziness and headaches. Many patients can directly trace it to a slip, fall, car accident or some sort of trauma. Most people have tried a number of other treatments and health-care providers. Very often advanced imaging such as an MRI has been done, and still they are left without answers.

Upper cervical chiropractors have been getting tremendous results with both balance disorders and headaches for a long time. The success rate in my office is 90% but we haven’t always known exactly why. Recent research has pointed to cerebrospinal fluid flow (CSF) as a possible cause of these issues, and upper cervical chiropractic techniques as a solution. Using upright MRI, researchers were able to demonstrate a disturbance in the CSF flow exiting the skull. An upper cervical correction was made, and a post MRI was performed, which showed normal flow of CSF exiting the skull. Once that fluid was put back into the correct circulation, the patients in the research study were able to get relief from their headaches and dizziness.

Cerebrospinal fluid protects the brain and spinal cord, it also takes away waste and delivers nutrients. It is made in the brain, then exits the skull and travels down the spinal canal. If the upper neck is misaligned, it can compress the tissue around the spine, and cause a blockage, which doesn’t allow the fluid to flow properly out of the skull. This leads to increased pressure in the skull. Since the pressure can’t escape the skull outwardly, it has to turn inward. This leads to squeezing the brain. When the brain is squeezed, blood flow in the brain can be diminished. The decrease in blood flow to certain parts of the brain can trigger vertigo attacks, migraines, and light headed spells.

While not all balance disorders and headaches are caused by disrupted CSF flow, or a previous neck injury, in my experience a great deal began with an upper cervical misalignment, and as such, they improve dramatically with correcting that misalignment. A short, non-invasive upper cervical examination can determine whether or not this correction can be the answer for those suffering from this kind of disorder.
