Let’s Talk About Microneedling

Anytime we talk about neurotoxins (Dysport, Botox) we also like to mention microneedling.  Microneedling stimulates your body’s production of collagen, whereas neurotoxins are going to relax facial expressions and keep you from breaking down collagen.  Microneedling is used to stimulate collagen production, thus softening lines and wrinkles over time.  To maximize results, neurotoxins and microneedling go hand in hand. Rarely will we recommend one without the other.

What is Microneedling

As we age, collagen production decreases.  This decrease leads to signs of aging in our skin.  Microneedling is a tried and true way of building your own body’s collagen without the need of any other product.  One way to help stimulate collagen production, is to induce some type of injury to your skin.  The injury process alerts your brain to start making new collagen bundles.  Microneedling is a very safe way of creating tiny micro channels in the dermis (the layer beneath the top layer of skin; epidermis).  These tiny mico-channels are the “injury” which in turn stimulates the production of collagen.

How often Should I get Microneedling

For aging concerns, we typically recommend doing four to six needling treatments per year.  After the injury has been caused in the skin, it takes your body four to six weeks to stimulate collagen, thus repairing itself.  After this period of time, your skin will again, stop producing collagen which is why repeating this treatment is so vital to suppress the signs of aging. One, maybe two treatments a year, is not going to give you the results you are looking for.

Wrinkles and scars look very similar underneath the microscope, so microneedling is effective in scar treatment.  Stimulating your body’s collagen will help to soften and remove scars. Depending on the severity of your scars, you may need a series of 4 – 6 back-to-back treatments for optimal results.

What to Expect During and After Treatment

You might be wondering if microneedling hurts.  Before treatment begins, a topical numbing cream is applied to ease any discomfort from the process.  After treatment leaves you with very little downtime.  You may experience some redness following treatment but that will diminish.  You will be sent home with a post treatment kit which is included in your treatment. These products help to speed up recovery time and allow for very little redness or irritation.

After your treatment, we ask you refrain from any type of exposure to germs such as a visit to a doctor’s office or going to the gym.  The following day it is safe to reapply your make up and go about your day as you normally would.
