Computers including laptops in the last 20 years have become something we can not live without. They are ubiquitous and rely on a sedentary position allowing the user to concentrate. This is why there is a chair with a back to it and that helps us focus on the work we do while relaxing our physical bodies. However, sitting at a computer desk for full day is harmful to the body for many reasons. For one, it reduces blood flow and metabolic rate which is associated to weight gain, muscle weakness, and increased risk of chronic diseases such as heart disease and diabetes. It can also lead to sleeping problems. Prolonged sitting can also negatively effect your overall posture which may lead to spinal related issues as well as musculoskeletal related disorders all over the body. The reduced blood circulation in conjunction with pressure points present can result in swollen lower extremities (feet and legs), as well as an increased risk of blood clots in these regions. The inhibition of metabolism may contribute to poor digestion. So, is there a chance we can stop working on a computer? Definitely that’s not a possible solution so since not everyone can get an electric standing desk with a treadmill.

What can we do?

Standing while working offers limited but slightly promising benefits for the body. For one thing, it promotes better pelvic postures by increasing engagement of the muscles in our core and reducing tightness in muscles around the hips and lower back. This can reduce strain on the structures of our pelvis and spine. Standing encourages slight variations in posture and engages the large muscles of our legs leading to increased calorie burn. Unfortunately, it does not improve circulation and can actually cause issues with circulation in the legs if standing for more than 2 hours at a time. Standing can slightly reduce the risk of weight gain but does not show significant improvement of sedentary related health issues. It does on the other hand alleviate muscle stiffness and joint pain caused by a lack of movement. Standing has been shown in some studies to improve concentration and productivity but not if standing for more than an hour. Standing can help keep the mind alert and energized.

There are more than one ways to incorporate standing into your work routine. It’s important to invest in an electric adjustable standing desk with memory sets to allow you to switch between sitting and standing positions effortlessly. Standing desk converters are a second best option to transform your existing fixed height desk into a standing workstation. Consider wearing comfortable shoes and standing on a soft floor. Use an anti-fatigue mat for hard surfaces to allow you to stand comfortably longer. Still take breaks where you walk around and stretch even if you stand and work. Walking meetings are a great way to get movement throughout the day. Remember, the key is to stand frequently with short duration and having a regiment balancing sitting and standing thats right for you.
