Vehicle wraps: Stick With Quality for Perfromance

Posted in: Industry News

All vehicle wraps are not created equal. Poorly designed vehicle wraps are ineffective. Scrimping on quality wrap materials means a very short lifetime. Using inexperienced wrap installers causes a myriad of problems down the road.

While a vehicle wrap is an upfront cost it is, if done by professionals, one of the most cost-effective forms of advertising. Vehicle wraps, a virtual rolling billboard, cost $0.77 / impression where a traditional billboard costs $2.18 / impression. A vehicle wrap costs less than the annual cost for a typical small newspaper ad run 2-3 times per week but the vehicle wrap will last 5-10 years!

A professional vehicle wrap designer uses software and techniques specifically for vehicle wraps. Every make and model of a vehicle changes over time so professionals have libraries of templates for the basic lines. However, they will also physically measure and inspect each vehicle for variances. They take into consideration where the text and images line up with doors, door handles, windows, trim, screws, etc. They design for all the curves, dips, and angles that can distort the design once it’s applied.

As with almost everything, there’s a price range that’s dependently solely on the quality of materials used in producing a custom vehicle wrap. There are many different brands of vinyl and laminates that can be used. 3M and Avery are generally regarded as the top 2 brands. The real difference that will impact price more than brand is how the vinyl and laminate are made. A “cast” vinyl and laminate should ALWAYS be used for vehicle graphics unless the installation is short term (less than a year or so) in which case “calendar” materials are fine. Cast materials are also more pliable and will install with fewer issues especially when there are lot of curves / details. 3M Envision wrap film is environmentally friendly and has raised the bar for performance throughout the industry.

Installing vehicle wraps takes practice. Using an experienced wrap installer means the graphics will line up as designed, edges won’t lift off, there won’t be excessive bubbles and wrinkles, the design won’t be warped from overstretching the vinyl, and, in the long run, less labor cost. Wrap installers gain experience working with “certified” installers. There are several certifications available but, again, 3M and Avery rank at the top.

Spot-On Signs & Graphics uses all 3M products on vehicles whether it’s a full-wrap or a partial wrap. We’ll help you get the most for your advertising dollar with a vehicle wrap design and installation that will increase your sales.
