Signage FAQ – I have never purchased a sign before. Where do I start?

Posted in: Industry News

Okay, you’re in the market for a sign.  Now what??

Before you purchase a sign, take a look around you!  Your commercial signage is an investment. It is more than a “marker” for where you’re located. It speaks volumes of who you are, what you do, and who you serve. Check out the signs of other businesses like yours, signs of businesses in your area, and signs that appeal to you. Here are some things to keep in mind:

Will the sign be indoors or outdoors? This will, in large part, determine the materials used. Outdoor signs naturally endure more wear and tear from the elements: wind, sun, rain, snow, temperature.

Are there landlord/city/county restrictions or permits required? It’s important for you to know what your landlord does / does not allow. Your sign company can help you with city / county permits if need be. There will be a cost associated with it but be forewarned, many signs require permits.

What is the expected life of the sign? Is it your main business sign that you want to last for years to come or is it a promotional / temporary banner or sidewalk sign? Do you want it to last days, weeks, months, or years?

Does it need to be lighted? If it’s an exterior sign, do you want it visible only during business hours or 24/7? There are many options for lit signs so spend some of your time looking at signs after dark. Many indoor signs are lighted as well: menu boards, lobby signs, sports score-boards, etc.

How will your customers view your sign? The size and amount of lettering or graphics needed for an effective sign are determined by its distance from the reader AND how much time they have to absorb the message. Will your customers view the sign close-up or will they be driving past it?

What are you trying to say? Decide on a message that is clear and simple. Focus on a few keywords that describe your business and how you help your customers.  Do you save them time, money, frustrations? Do you add peace of mind, or some other benefit?

Now you’re ready to talk about purchasing your sign.  Armed with the information from your research you will be able to give your sign company the basic information they need to help you decide on the perfect sign at the right price for your purposes. You can also expect more questions about the project but they will walk you through these nitty-gritty details. What kind of artwork is involved and what file format is it in? Will you want the sign installed, delivered, or will you pick it up? When do you need the sign? What is your budget for the sign?

Spot-On Signs & Graphics is here to help you every step of the way. We will help you through the myriad of products and options that will best serve your sign’s purpose and guide you in how to make a truly eye-catching sign that will have a positive impact on your business.
