Logo for Lupo TXD that was fabricated into a channel letter lightbox.

Channel letter signs are considered one of the real workhorses for building signage. They are versatile with the ability to be designed in quite a few different configuration styles which produces the visibility that makes them such a valuable asset.

Channel letter signs are typically considered an exterior sign style, but they can also work well as interior signage or even décor. With the wide variety of styles and illumination methods they can fit almost any need.

We recently worked with Lupo Taekwondo who moved into a new, larger facility. Their logo and name is a perfect fit for channel letters. Channel letters come in 2 styles: Raceway Mounted and Remote Mounted. In this instance, the lease defined the sign type allowed which narrows down your options. But let’s discuss the differences between the two.

  • Raceway mounted: This style of channel letter has the letter set mounted on a long narrow box. (called a raceway) Typically the electronics all reside in the raceway. This make installation less intrusive by reducing the amount of penetrations in the wall.
  • Remote mounted: This is where the individual letters are mounted directly to the wall. It requires several penetrations in the wall for fasteners and a wire for each letter. Typically they require more man hours to install but produces a higher end appearance.

For this specific job the faces had to be removed and the screws were drilled through the back panels. You can see the LED lights and the depth of the cabinets.

For this specific job the sign desired consisted of type as well as a 48″ circle logo. Although this is not a letter, it is still considered a channel letter. The production process is identical to the letters only there may be additional supports for the larger cabinet.

After the letters are fabricated we move to installation. With every individual mount channel letter set we begin with a drill pattern to ensure that the letters are spaced and oriented correctly. This pattern also includes the location for the full penetration hole for the electrical wiring to go through the building facade and get tied into an electric source within. On remote mount letters, each letter has its own wire that must pass through the wall. Once all the letters are mounted, we go behind the wall to tie the wires to their respective power supply. The power supplied are mounted in a protective junction box and must include a power cutoff switch to allow service technicians work on the sign without risk of shock.

The final appearance of the channel letter set ready to draw in customers old and new!

It is important to make sure your sign is UL listed. This is a process where the fabrication shop is certified by Underwriters Laboratories after auditing their process and products used in manufacturing the sign to insure safety and durability. Not all municipalities require the UL listing, but for the safety of our customers and service technicians, we only use UL approved components and products.

The final product is a breathtaking sign that will allow for Lupo TXD to be noticed day and night!
