ADA signage it’s the law
ADA signage, signs that benefit Americans with disabilities are legally required and federally mandated by the Americans with disabilities act of 1990 and most recently updated by the ADA in 2009. As it turns out many business are not familiar enough with the requirements of the ADA to sufficiently follow the detailed signage requirements to protect themselves from potential litigation brought on them by attorneys who specialize in suing out of compliance businesses on behalf of the disabled community. A recent case in point, Dallas Digital Signs & Graphics was contacted by a local bank who was in the midst of one such lawsuit regarding their ATM system, which although was ADA compliant with the pre 2009 ADA changes, was no longer acceptable, and had caused them to be sued by a specialist attorney from Dallas. We were asked to research and prepare signage that would bring them back into compliance. Dallas Digital Signs & Graphics directly contacted the attorneys from the national association or the blind to formulate the signage that would be fully ADA compliant and prevent protracted litigation for the bank. We turned the project around in less than a week. Interestingly, this job prompted us to inspect the ATMs at our own bank, which were interestingly also out of compliance with the current ADA regulations, so we fixed them too. Our bank had relied on the manufacturers of the ATMs to provide ADA compliant placarding, which they had failed to do. We then did a survey of four other banks and only found one ATM that had proper placarding, it had been put into service in 2012. The enclosed picture shows the additional wording and Braille sign that was added to the non-conforming raised image of a headset that used to be sufficient for ATM use. Please contact us at Dallas Digital Signs & Graphics to discuss your existing or upcoming ADA signage needs!
