Cor-Ten Steel Signage by Dallas Digital Signs & Graphics
Cor-Ten steel is a ferrous alloy developed by US Steel Corporation to provide a structural steel that does not require priming and painting. Known as weathering steel, Cor-Ten is designed to promote a thin, stable rust layer that then protects the underlying steel from further oxidation. The brand Cor-Ten is also know by the materials specification A 242 and more recently the revised and improved A 588 specification. Cor-Ten is a valuable signage material, since once installed, it provides a strong, statement and creates a rustic, weathered look for our clients. Most often used in outdoor monument signs, Cor-Ten is also a green materials choice, since it does not require any further processing, stripping or painting during the lifetime of the sign, as well as being 100% recyclable. We are currently working with the City of Mesquite Texas on the Cor-Ten signs for their city park system. These signs are plasma cut from heavy, 3/8” thick plate material, before being prepped with sandblasting (to promote even weathering) , and then mounted on natural, monument stone substrate. Depending on the local weather conditions, it can take from 30 days to almost a year to fully weather the surface of the steel. The result will be beautiful, rustic signage that will last for literally generations.
