Life Size Prototype Units for Goodman Manufacturing in Houston, TX

Goodman is an air conditioning and heating manufacturer that offers their customers products in a variety of shapes, sizes, and capabilities, which is exactly what they asked us to show case with life size prototype boxes of each of their models! Though their products come in many different sizes, this project was just one – large.

These life size prototypes were created so that each of Goodman’s 196 distributing locations would have 1, or in some cases, 2 copies of each unit that they could set up on display so people could see exactly how big they were and how much space they are going to take up and what each model looks like in general.

To start, we had to get life size measurements for each one of the units that they make and have available for sale. They wanted to be able to send these out in a flat packed box and for anyone to be able to put it together, so we printed each design on cardboard with tabs specifying which tab needed to go into each slit to hold it together in order to make it stand upright.

In order to make a complete box, we printed 1 section that would have 2 sides of the box and the bottom, and then the other section that we would print would have the other 2 sides and the top and then the tabs and slits would be marked with were to put everything for it to stand up and look like a life size ac unit. For the larger units we had to use 3 4’x8’ boards of cardboard because the end size was too big to be in one piece.  These larger designs would have 1 side of the box and the top and then the other 2 pieces would have sides & bottoms.

Once everything was printed and approved by the customer using a life size proof, we had to have them cut out to the shape of the sides and top and bottom with the tabs and slits. We made lots of hand cut life size proofs until they were approved with the exact measurements, designs, and a user friendly set-up!
