Article Picture 2Project: Craig Biggio Hall of Fame Display

Location: Minute Maid Park in Houston, TX

Client: The Houston Astros

Before the announcement was made that Craig Biggio had been voted into the Hall of Fame, we were contacted by The Houston Astros to print an assortment of signs for a display honoring him in Minute Maid Park.

This display was made up of three large pictures of Biggio, two cutouts of him, a 24” Hall of Fame logo, and fourteen cutout numbers.

In the first picture, you can see three of the cutout numbers. These numbers were made to depict years he had major accomplishments, as well as his statistics when he finished his career. You can also see the bottom half of the Hall of Fame logo. The second picture features a cutout of Biggio in his catcher’s uniform, and in the background you can see more of the cutout numbers, as well as the large pictures of Biggio that served as the display’s background. The third picture has the second cutout of Biggio, and you can clearly see the cutouts of his career statistics as well as another large background picture of him. The fourth picture is of the display when it was complete, featuring our work alongside Biggio jerseys and pictures. When this job was completed it truly became a great tribute to this Hall of Famer!

Craig Biggio played for The Houston Astros as a second baseman, catcher, and outfielder from 1988 to 2007, his entire professional baseball career. After an incredible career, on July 24, 2007, he announced his retirement. Biggio finished his career with 3,060 career hits, 668 doubles, 291 home runs, 1175 RBI, 414 stolen bases, and a .281 batting average. On his third try, receiving 82.7% of the votes, Craig Biggio was elected to the Hall of Fame on January 6, 2015. We were very excited to be able to create a display in Minute Maid Stadium honoring his career!

The three large pictures of Craig Biggio used in the background of the display were 96”x43” each. They were direct printed onto Insite foam board 3/16 inch substrate using our Oce Flatbed printer. Using the same printer, we direct printed both Biggio cutouts onto Ultraboard and die cut them. The Hall of Fame logo was made of a 24” diameter die cut clear acrylic to which we applied solid black vinyl, and then the logo was applied first surface using shiny mirrored gold vinyl. The fourteen floating numbers were printed onto Ultraboard using our Oce Flatbed printer, die cut, and were made to look like they were floating by attaching a small puck to the backing that made them stand out from the background pictures.

We have a lot of experience in rush jobs, and this project was definitely an example of that! We received the order for this job on December 22, 2014—but we were told that we would be supplied with the files to be printed on January 6, 2015. This means we were able to go out and buy the materials we needed for the job, but we weren’t able to start printing until the day of the install! The files came in on schedule the morning of the 6th, and we spent the day printing, die cutting, and preparing to go set up the display at Minute Maid Park that night. We do our production in-house, and this equips us to have one of the fastest turn-around times in the business—while still providing our customers with the superior quality they expect.
