Every year, getting organized is in the top 10 list of New Years Resolutions.  Most people try doing this by purchasing a bunch of containers, sorting their stuff into it and trying to find a home for the containers.Because they’re really keeping all of the “stuff” in the same place (their home) if it makes a difference, it’s only temporary.

There’s an expert on clutter named Flylady (click here to see her website) whose favorite saying is “You can’t organize clutter, you can only get rid of it.”  But what it you aren’t sure you can part with some of these things?

One idea is to box it all up, put a date on the box and them put it in storage. If you don’t miss anything in the box for a year, then you probably didn’t need it in the first place.

Of course this doesn’t apply to things you will need for taxes!

We’re all trying to save money. One way to do that is to stay in a home that may feel a little bit too small because of all of your “stuff.”

Here are some tips to help your home feel more spacious

1. Clean your windows and drapes! During the winter months there are fewer hours of day time and many days that are cloudy and dreary. Clean windows let more light in and help your home feel less like a cave. 2. Put away all those knick-nacks. If you have a million little items taking up space that take forever to dust AND they don’t make you smile when you see them – they are clutter! Pass along the items that don’t make you joyful to be around and pack up the ones you are unsure about.  You’ll be amazed at how spacious and free your home feels

3. Stop storing stuff in your garage – your garage is for your car!. If your stuff is less valuable than your car, it’s time to find the stuff a new home!  Offsite storage is an affordable way to keep your stuff out of your garage so your car can stay out of the weather and be safe.
