Tips on Choosing A Moving Company 3 | Be Wary of Moving Companies That Only Accept Cash Payment

Moving is stressful enough – don’t inadvertently hire a moving company operating a scam business. While preparing for a move you might be worried that a lamp will get broken or that the movers won’t show up on time.  But, the one thing you may not be worrying about may be the biggest concern of all – hiring a scam moving company that will hold your belongings hostage until you pay a large amount in cash.

One red flag is a moving company that accepts only cash payments or requires a large cash deposit up front before the move. What should you look out for?  A recent Washington Post article talked about 2 common moving company scams and how to avoid them.

There are two major scams you should watch out for when hiring movers: 1)  the hostage-goods scam and 2)  the advance deposit scheme. In a hostage-goods scam, somebody already has your belongings and quoted you specific price. But, by the time you get to your new home they ask you to pay an inflated price before they deliver your goods.  In a deposit scam, movers ask for an upfront cash deposit and then never show up.  Once you’ve paid a deposit in cash you have little recourse.

How do you protect yourself?  You should always understand in advance what methods of payment are accepted by a moving company – cash, check, money order or credit card?   Hiring a mover that accepts credit cards is another way to identify a mover that “stands behind their work”. Paying by credit card gives you the additional protection of being able to go to your credit card company in the case of a dispute and guard against scam moving companies.
