There is a new sign in town that Californians should know about. Starting on August 30, 2018, California Prop 65 signs are changing. If you already have Prop 65 signs, they will not comply with regulations come the end of August. They will need to be replaced. Fortunately, we can help you with that without too much fuss.
What is Proposition 65?
California’s Proposition 65, also called the Safe Drinking Water and Toxic Enforcement Act, was enacted in 1986. This was done to help all Californians make informed decisions about protecting themselves from chemicals that are known to cause cancer, congenital disabilities, or other reproductive harm.
Proposition 65 requires businesses to provide warnings to Californians regarding exposure to chemicals that can cause harmful effects, especially those chemicals that can cause cancer and congenital disabilities. These chemicals are often found in products that people purchase. They can be found in homes and workplaces, and many of these chemicals are released into the environment.
Under Proposition 65, any California business must publish a list of chemicals known to cause cancer, birth defects, and other reproductive harm, and they must update these lists every year.
What types of chemicals are on the Proposition 65 list?
Since 1987, the list has grown to over 900 chemicals. Some of these chemicals are naturally occurring. Others are synthetic. These include additives and ingredients found in pesticides, foods, dye, drugs, solvents, and common household products.
What must new Proposition 65 signs include?
Starting in August of 2018, new signs will be required to include specific chemical names, a warning symbol, and any additional pertinent information.
If significant amounts of listed chemicals are found in products, a workplace or facility, that business must post warning signs.
The Prop65 signs you have now will be outdated by the end of August, so now is the time to order your new signs.
It’s no longer acceptable to post only a warning. Your Prop65 signs must be more specific than ever. We can help you get it right.
