Laser-cut acrylic offers several advantages over products cut with a CNC router. Of course, the outcome depends on the specific requirements of the project. We invested in this equipment for several reasons.

Previously, when we cut acrylic letters on a CNC router, the bit size gave us some challenges. It meant that using 3/16-inch diameter bits resulted in rounded angles on the insides of the capital letter A or the bottom of a V. Laser cutting provides higher precision and finer details, allowing for intricate and complex designs. The focused laser beam can achieve sharp corners and intricate patterns.

Intricate Shapes and Small Features

Laser cutting is especially well-suited for cutting small features and intricate shapes due to the thinness of the laser beam. This makes it ideal for creating small text, detailed graphics, or complex patterns. A case in point is the signage for the Fullerton Train Museum, which features a complex graphic with straight and curved style elements. We can cut fine details such as those and create the precise inside cuts we discussed earlier. Once again, the thin laser makes it possible.

Smooth Edges and Enhanced Versatility

Laser cutting produces smoother edges, producing a cleaner and more polished appearance. CNC routers, while capable of providing smooth edges, require additional finishing steps to achieve the same level of refinement. This means that we can fabricate your products faster, which results in quicker turnaround times for the projects and installations. By the way, an added plus is the ability to engrave fine details in acrylic, aluminum, and various other materials. For clients favoring mixed media signage, this is great news.

Keeping Our CNC Router

The new laser cutter is excellent, but it does not mean that we will scrap the CNC router. Remember that the choice between laser cutting and CNC routing depends on the project’s specific requirements, the material being used, and the desired outcome. We still prefer CNC routers for cutting thicker materials.
