Exterior Vinyl Lettering Advertises for Wings Café at the Fullerton Airport!

Wings Café at the Fullerton Airport has quickly transformed into an institution. A few years ago, we worked with the facility’s management team to put together restaurant signs and graphics. Part and parcel of the setup were exterior vinyl lettering that advertises the facility. Recently, the team called us back to do more work.
Upgrading the Lettering with Sizing and Durability in Mind
When we met with the management team, we learned that they had new needs for their exterior vinyl lettering. They noticed that the area received far more direct sunlight than they had expected. Similarly, the dust of airport operations had found ways to get under some of the vinyl lettering.
Asking us for advice, we suggested replacing the flat-surface vinyl with 3M cast vinyl that could conform to even the tiniest nooks and crannies of the wall’s surface. Doing so would prevent dust from finding small entryways. Our technicians added a UV protection laminate to help with fading due to extensive sunlight exposure.
Although the wall with the lettering is only visible from the runway, the management team found that it was a great advertising tool for reaching pilots and mechanics working at the airport. Besides that, it would be a great way of making an excellent impression on Airport Day, which is right around the corner and invites the public to visit the facilities.
Bigger Is Better
When you compare the lettering size on the project, you will notice that we increased the height to fit perfectly into the spaces provided. The client asked us to go bigger, which would make the restaurant’s name stand out even more. This is not an unusual request. Frequently, business owners are reluctant to go big.
In some cases, they do not know how to select a size that will get them noticed. For example, you need a five-inch-tall letter to have consumers read it from 50 feet away. Add another inch for every ten feet of distance. Moreover, go bigger to make up for traffic speed in front of your location. The faster the traffic moves, the bigger the sign needs to be.
Not surprisingly, a typical building sign usually measures between 30 and 50 inches in height. However, there are also other ways that you can ensure readability. Take a page from the playbook of the Wings Café and choose a high-contrast color combination. Dark letters do very well on a light-colored background.
Finally, there is the font consideration. Old English and similar script fonts can be challenging to read even under optimal conditions. When you factor in traffic speed and other distractions, it would be better to stick with a Serif or Sans Serif font.
