Boise, ID – How Custom Aluminum Signs are Crafted in 8 Steps | Sign Company News

Posted in: Industry News

Aluminum is one of the most versatile metals for sign making. It can be used for various purposes. But how are these signs made?

Aluminum Sign Making in 8 Steps

  1. The first step is to create a design. This is done by hand or with computer-aided design (CAD) software.
  2. The design is then converted to a vector file, which is a scalable digital file the sign-making machine can read.
  3. Once the design is complete, it is sent to a plotter to be cut from vinyl.
  4. After the vinyl is cut, it is applied to an aluminum sheet. A machine then engraves the design into the metal. This process, called “chemical milling,” leaves a raised, three-dimensional image. If the design calls for holes they are also cut during this step.
  5. Once the sign is cut, it is sandblasted. This helps provide a better grip for paint or powder coatings and gives the aluminum a more uniform appearance and glossy finish. The sign can also be left unpainted for a matte finish.
  6. Once the sign has been smoothed down, the sign is ready for painting. This is completed through various methods, including screen printing, powder coating, and anodizing.
  7. After the paint is applied, the sign is cured in an oven ensuring the paint will not chip or fade over time.
  8. Finally, the sign is installed at its intended location. This can be completed by the customer or by one of our experts at FASTSIGNS® of Boise, ID.

Ways Aluminum Signs are Made

The most common method is with a CNC machine – a computer-controlled router which cuts the metal following a design file. A CNC machine uses a spinning bit to cut through the metal and produce precise designs.

Another method for making aluminum signs is with a laser cutter. This machine uses a focused light beam to melt or vaporize the metal. Laser cutters are precise and can make extremely intricate designs.

Aluminum signs are also sometimes made by hand, but this is much less common. Hand-made signs are usually made by first cutting the metal into the shape with a saw and then hand engraving it to create the design.
