OSHA Requirements for Job Site Signs

All employers are responsible for providing their employees with a safe workplace. OSHA’s role is to help ensure these conditions for America’s working men and women are met by setting and enforcing standards and providing training, outreach, education, and assistance.

One way they ensure workplaces are safe is by requiring employers to post signs warning employees of potential hazards. Employers must also provide instructions on how to avoid or minimize these hazards.

For example, OSHA has a standard requiring employers to post specific signs where hazardous chemicals are present.

The requirements for construction site signs include:

  • Size, shape, and pictorial content
  • Location
  • Visibility
  • Illumination (when required)
  • Maintenance
  • Letter font and size
  • Signal words

The most common types of construction site signs are:

  • Warning signs are used to alert employees and visitors to potential hazards with the possibility of serious injuries or death. They are used to warn of physical threats, such as electrical dangers, trip hazards, and chemical hazards. The word “Warning” is written in black letters with an orange background. Examples of these include “Warning – Construction Area” and “Slow Down – Construction Area Ahead.”
  • Caution signs are used to alert people to potential hazards causing minor injuries. The word “Caution” is written in black letters with a yellow background. An example of a caution sign would be “Caution – Wet Floor” or “Caution – Falling Objects.”
  • Danger signs are used to alert employees and others to potential hazards that could result in in death or serious injury if not avoided. The word “Danger” is written in white letters with a red background. An example of a danger sign would be “Danger – Do Not Enter” or “Danger – High Voltage.”
  • Safety signs are used to alert people to potential hazards. They are used to remind people to be safe and to follow safety procedures. The word “Safety” is written in white letters with a green background. An example of a safety sign would be “Safety Instructions” or “Eye Wash Station.”
