Vestavia Hills, AL – AC Not Working? HVAC Expert Shares Tips to Cool Down a Room

How to Cool Down a RoomAs summer fastly approaches, many of us gear up for the coming days of blazing sunshine and extreme heat by learning expert tips and tricks that work to cool down our homes, or more specifically, one room of the home. Running the A/C sometimes isn’t enough to compete with the outdoor humidity and heat, especially if the unit is old and outdated, has dirty ductwork, or needs repairs. Sometimes, an A/C isn’t available to cool down the home for one reason or another. Luckily, the A/C is one of many ways to cool down the rooms in your home.

Whether you want a foolproof method of cooling a room without an A/C or need a boost on the hottest days of the year, check out the tips below. Use a tip or two from this list for cool room success.

Turn on the Ceiling Fans

Ceiling fans help circulate cool air through a room. In a closed space, a ceiling fan can decrease temps by 6 to 8 degrees!  This may seem like a small number but when discussing the heat, it’s a huge number. Ceiling fans can cool down a room and increase your comfort when the air conditioner is running or when it’s turned off.

Close the Blinds

If temperatures outside are mild enough to turn off the A/C or if your A/C has gone out, open the windows and close the blinds. Many people mistakenly raise the blinds during the day, which allows sunshine to heat up the room. Close the blinds and savor the cooler temps.

Use Fans Wisely

Room fans work great when placed correctly inside a room. For example, a box fan placed in the window pushes out hot air, in turn cooling the room even more.

Adjusting fan blades so they run counterclockwise benefits the cool effects you’ll feel in the room.

The “old-school” method of placing a bowl of ice in front of a fan to create an icebox also works wonders on hot days when all you want is a cool, refreshing breeze of air.

Cotton Sheets

Cotton sheets help you get a good night’s sleep! Cotton breathes whereas other materials do not. This keeps your body cool while you sleep. Other materials can make you sweaty and stick to your skin. Always invest in cotton sheets for cool comfort when it’s hot outside.
