Birmingham, AL – Heating and Cooling Expert Explains How Mini-Splits Work

Posted in: Industry News

How Mini-Splits WorkDuctless air conditioners, often called mini-splits, are a popular option for homeowners looking to cool down specific rooms inside a home. Many people are unfamiliar with mini-splits and how they work although we hope that changes today as we examine this very information.

Mini-splits work the same way as conventional air duct systems with a few differences. Let’s take a look.

Air Duct A/C vs. Mini-Splits

In a traditional duct A/C unit, ducts push and pull air to a central unit, usually located in an attic or other closed location. Vents deliver cool air to different rooms in the home.

In the mini-split system, individual indoor units are placed inside each room. This unit is responsible for handling its own cooling needs using a fan and evaporator unit which are connected to an outdoor compressor.  The mini-split doesn’t need ducts to work.

Mini-split systems can be added to each room at a cost less than you would spend to install a new HVAC unit in the home. They’re most commonly used in single-family homes but work in apartments and other types of housing units as well.

The Benefits of Mini-Splits

People choose mini-split systems because installing new ductwork is often expensive and time-consuming. Some homes are not spacious enough to allow a new system. Mini-splits work amazingly in these and many other situations.

Cooling a room with a mini-split is easier since it’s not responsible for cooling an entire home.  Most homeowners experience cost savings when mini-splits are part of their cooling system.

Mini-splits come in assorted shapes and sizes. You need to choose the correct BTU for your room size to ensure it cools the area properly. Choosing the wrong BTU can mean inefficient cooling or overuse.
