4/23-Tips for Organizing Your Mudroom and Laundry Room This Spring

Posted in: Industry News

We’ve been covering the major rooms in our Spring Cleaning series. However, many of us often overlook the mudroom and the laundry room when spring cleaning and reorganizing our home. Today, I’ll show you some tips to make both more efficient and even show you the advantages of combining both into one multi-purpose utility room.

The Mudroom

  • Include a comfortable bench to make it easier for everyone to put on or take off their shoes and boots. Include some wicker baskets to hold the footwear.
  • Install wall pegs to hold coats, scarves, purses, and backpacks as everyone in the family comes in for the day. This way everyone’s stuff won’t be scattered around the house.
  • Organize by individual cubbies if you have space. That way, each kid and mom can locate coats and backpacks faster each day.

The Laundry Room

  • Include all the necessary supplies, such as multiple laundry baskets for sorting light and dark clothes, a drying rack, and a hanging area. Make sure other items like your ironing board or steamer are easily attainable.
  • Make it a multi-functional workshop area. Add plenty of counter space to you can fold clothes and transfer it to the proper basket before delivering it to a linen closet or bedroom. Add shelves and cabinets to store laundry supplies or store freshly folded towels.
  • Install a deep sink. This makes soaking deep stains easier, as well as hand washing swimwear or delicate items.

Combining the Two

Consider combining the two rooms into, especially if your laundry room is already near the front.  This idea works well if your children are running home from sports practices with sweaty gear and as soon as they bring their duffel bag in, they can throw their jerseys and shorts right in the washer.

You can still have aspects of both the mudroom and the laundry room and keep it stylish and organized. Position your washer and dryer under the countertops and include an open hanging closet, some shelves, and cabinets. The mudroom area can still include baskets for winter hats and gloves, coat racks, and a sturdy bench area to make it easier to take off boots and shoes.

These are just a few tips for organizing your mudroom and laundry room.. Next week we’ll discuss sprucing up the backyard. If you would like more tips, please contact Refresh Organizers & Designers at (510) 570-1292.
